How to increase Internet connection speed in Windows XP
Me and my friend took same Internet connection (Same bandwidth) but when my friend informed me, his Internet connection speed is faster as me, I was shocked. Tried some troubleshooting steps but no go. Called the Helpdesk and they informed me, connection was OK. Finally I went to my Friend’s room to check whether he is saying truth or just telling lie. Found his connection was faster. Then goggled for some time and found some solution. Hope it may help you!! Now I am satisfied with my network connection speed.
The steps are for increasing BROADBAND speed in Windows XP and also work for 56k modems too.
1. Logged on to computer using Administrator Credentials.
2. Start > Run > type “gpedit.msc” (It is not available in XP Home)
3. Expand the Local Computer Policy.
4. Expand the Administrative Templates.
5. Expand the Network branch.
6. Highlight the “QoS Packet Scheduler” in left side window.
7. In right Window double click the “limit reservable bandwidth” setting.
8. On setting tab check the ENABLED item.
9. Change the value to 0 (ZERO), where it says “Bandwidth limit %” .
10. Close gpedit.msc.
11. Restart the system and check with the network connection speed. Note: It does not work on XP Home Edition.

The best way is:
1. enter to DOS and type format C:
2. get a ubuntu CD
3. Install
4. Done!
And you will see a great speed on your connection

I’ll have to try these tweaks, my FIOS connection is always slower on my XP machine. Also you could always try the Google caching plugin which pre-fetches popular pages on the internet.

Hey, I was lucky to have found your information here. I tried it on my own computer and it really works. I will consider upgrading to Vista sometime next month and I wonder the same adjustment applies as well.
