The future of Internet with The Grid
“Cern” the origin of the web near Geneva, is now working on “The Grid” that boasts speeds nearly 10,000 times faster than a typical Broadband connection. Scientists assembled at the Global Grid Forum discussed, what may be the Internet’s next evolutionary step. The Internet could soon be made obsolete by “The Grid.” At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection the lightning-fast replacement will be capable of downloading entire movie within seconds. While the Web is a service for sharing information over the Internet, the new system, Grid, is a service for sharing computer power and data storage capacity over the Internet. The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the Web, could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players, and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call. The power of the grid will become apparent this summer after what scientists at Cern have termed their “red button” day — the switching on of the Large Hadron Collider, the new particle accelerator built to probe the origin of the universe. The grid will be activated at the same time to capture the data it generates.

This would be the next stage of media evolution. I think I can imagine some uses for this, but I bet there are some I would never even think of. The only thing that puzzles me is the infrastructure needed – how much time and $ would it cost to upgrade the existing wireing ? Or do we need a completely new set of wires and stuff ?

I would thank you for sharing this info, but I’m too much in awe. Can’t believe my own ear, is it true? 10,000 times faster than a typical Broadband connection!!! I can hardly wait to see what they come up with! I am sure that I will not get universal consensus on this, but you have to admit that the Internet is pretty darn great and this new system surely will be the Internet’s next evolutionary step, no doubt about that. Absolutely right you are the Internet will soon be made obsolete by “The Grid” technology.

This kind of speed will give us that chance to dream up new things we haven’t even thought of yet (think no fast food before cars!, etc). We don’t even know what we don’t know yet. Wow…that was kinda deep.

I think this is a fascinating project in terms of how it might transform or enhance computing as we now know it.

It a next evolution of the media. It provides different facility
to user, to connect to each other, conversation with different media etc.

Nothing is stable on the net. I have seen most of the prediction about the internet has gone in trash. It is a thing which can be changed in anyway and any reason.

Its speed is more than the broadband connection. With this much of speed we download the software, movie and games
with in second. Its a great !!!

This is very interesting topic. In the future, I imagine that we can download file from Internet at speed 1G/s. Please give us more infomation or link to learn about ‘Grid’. Thanks.

That is great to Get such a High speed connectivity. love to read more about grid over here !!

This is a very interesting idea, which has opened up my mind to the possibilities of the speed of data transfer and connectivity in the near future. I can’t wait to see what is in store for home users far beyond broadband cable connections.

Yeah, it sounds great, but how soon would it be available to the rest of the world?
Sounds like a small pet project for now?

Just like everyone else stated, the idea is great and it would no doubt benefit alot of people and businesses. But my question is how much is this going to cost? And will this be available to everyone or just Americans? And than there’s the matter of security, etc.

It feels to me like we have a long way to go. I live in a rural/suburban area where dial-up is still the main form of internet connection at speeds of about 24 kbps. I recently switched to a 3G aircard, but that is still much slower than cable or dsl. I look forward to the day when advances in internet access reach all parts of the country, even rural areas.
